A Dutch vacation home with a fun secret

Image
Now this Spakenburg vacation villa probably looks totally normal to the casual observer. Throughout the municipalities of  Greater Utrecht, there are any number of very similar houses. However, this one comes with a fun secret. As you walk through the house or even culsult the architectural plans held at the registry office in Bunschoten, you will see that there are two bathrooms in the property. They are both modern and well equipped with all of the necessary bathroom functionality, and most people accept that two high-class bathrooms is probably suitable for a facility of this size. The secret is this: somewhere, hidden within this Dutch vacation home, there is a third, clandestine bathroom. You might not find it and that's fine. The vacation home is more that sufficient without the third bathroom. It's got underfloor heating, an outdoor kitchen, built-in closets, a boot room AND a mud room, a secure child's play area, a small wine refrigerator. We could go on but you p...

There's more than cheese in Edam!

Image
Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, there was a vacation home in a faraway place called Edam, The Netherlands. Now this vacation home had two-bedrooms, one of which featured a carpeted on-suite. There was a kitchen, and yes, it had high-quality composite countertops, an American-style fridge-freezer, a fully electric oven and a brand-name espresso machine built right into the cabinetry. And the visitors to this accommodation all thought to themselves, "I can just stay here in the vacation home, because it's no nice." But then, like gently awaking from a pleasant dream on a Sunday at 10:00AM, they'd remember why they'd come to Edam in the first place. They wanted learn about and sample the magnificent cheese to which the town so generously lends its name. And that's what they would do: exploring the lanes in the old cheese quarter, attending a class to understand the different traditional methods by which Edam was produces, sitting on a park bench and re...

A mediocre Dutch vacation home

Image
In order to have "best" Dutch vacation homes, it is also necessary to have leisure dwellings that are merely ok. And this is one of those. This Naarden single bedroom is fine by most standards. If it was in Belgium, it would probably be considered one of the very best, but as we have learned, in the Netherlands, there is stiff competition for such accolades. So in what ways is this Dutch vacation home passable? Let's start with the pull out double sofa, which while not the most comfortable bed one might encounter, could easily accommodate two small humans for up to three nights, after which they would be able to rotate into the more traditional non-couch embedded bed in the bedroom. There is a microwave with a dedicated pizza function, a walk in shower with VERY hot water available and an arm chair, which can be reclined if pulled into the centre of the living room, thereby precluding any other possible seating in that area.

A Dutch vacation home where nothing illegal has ever happened

Image
When you stay in a vacation home there  is always the lingering concern that you are relaxing at a former crime scene. "What illicit activities were carried out here?" You wonder to yourself as you try to get into your romantic novel. Tax fraud? Drugs manufacturing?? Murder??? How can you enjoy a week in the Netherlands while staying in a house where a murder took place? Well, in this Dutch vacation home, that is something that you simply don't need to worry yourself about. From the earliest stages of its construction in the early 1990s, this Eindhoven 3-bedroom has been comprehensively monitored by a 24 hour surveillance team via a network of remote operated cameras covering every cubic centimeter of the property. Only through such meticulous observation can it be documented and guaranteed that nothing illegal has ever happened within the tastefully modern vacation rental. When you arrive at the home to check in, you are presented with a notarised declaration from the au...

A Dutch vacation home... in Belgium??!?!!

Image
OK, this is simply too much! How can one of the best Dutch vacation homes be physically located outside of Netherland borders? Surely someone is making a very bad joke here! Well, let's be careful. When the foundation of this lovingly-restored 3-bedroom getaway cottage was originally laid, the town of Maldegem, where the house stands, was actually a part of The Netherlands. So you see, without undermining the rightful sovereignty of the Kingdom of Belgium, we can, in a sense, consider this Belgian vacation home Dutch after all! And unlike most other Dutch vacation homes, this one provides you with a convenient base in the heart of East Flanders, from where you can explore the magnificent hamlets of Donk and Klein with ease. The house is well-equipped with 2 chimneys and at least 6 windows.
